About the Author
Subhobroto Mazumder is a geologist by profession and currently works as an explorer in an upstream oil company. A graduate in Applied Geology from IIT Roorkee, he also holds a PhD in Earth and Environmental Studies from NIT Durgapur. Born and raised in Durgapur, Mazumder now resides in Mumbai to Dehradun.

Formed in 2014 after the division of the state, Palghar is a district in Maharashtra known for its hilly terrain and significant tribal population. Historically, these communities have faced challenges like limited access to education, healthcare, and essential services, making them more vulnerable to misinformation. The spread of rumors during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially following the tragic lynching incident of two Sadhus in April 2020, highlighted the urgent need for effective communication strategies.

In response to this crisis, Balasaheb Patil spearheaded the ‘Jan Samwaad Abhiyaan’ to address the spread of false information and enhance community engagement. The initiative sought to create awareness, prevent rumors, and foster stronger relations between the police and the local population. Key objectives of the program included:

• Preventing the spread of rumors
• Promoting law and order
• Raising awareness about government schemes
• Educating the youth on legal and social matters
• Encouraging community participation in law enforcement efforts

Implementation Procedures and Strategies:

To effectively execute the ‘Jan Samwaad Abhiyaan,’ the Palghar Police developed several key strategies and procedures:

1. WhatsApp Groups in Every Village: A dedicated WhatsApp group was set up in each village to facilitate direct communication between the police and the local community. This provided a platform to share important updates, address rumors, and ensure rapid dissemination of accurate information.
2. Deployment of One Police Officer per Village: A police officer was assigned to each village to establish a constant presence and serve as a liaison between the police and the tribal communities. This officer built personal relationships with locals, gained trust, and ensured that the community felt heard and supported.
3. Recruitment Drives: To ensure that local tribes had representation within law enforcement, the police initiated recruitment drives aimed at encouraging tribal youth to join the force. 4. Pre-Police Recruitment Training: Special training programs were introduced for local youth interested in joining the police force. The efforts also contributed to a reduction in superstitious beliefs and a decrease in crime, including organized crime activities, through active community involvement.

Balasaheb Patil emphasized the importance of building trust and effective communication between the police and tribal communities. Regular dialogues and interactions between police officers and locals have made law enforcement more accessible and responsive. The initiative also provided platforms for local leaders, women’s groups, and community workers to participate in policing efforts, ensuring inclusivity and trust in the system.

Furthermore, the use of digital platforms, local media, and public awareness campaigns helped extend the initiative’s reach, amplifying its impact across Palghar. Police officers at all levels, including constables and sub-divisional police officers, were actively engaged in the community, offering a direct line for addressing local issues and building relationships.

Despite challenges such as geographical isolation and a long history of mistrust, Balasaheb Patil’s leadership and the ‘Jan Samwaad Abhiyaan’ initiative have proven highly successful in fostering a safer, more informed community. Jodhpur (Rajasthan) [India], January 2: The Society for Creative Satisfaction organised a grand event in Bal Niketan School, Jodhpur, to unveil the narrative poem Agni-Samadhi written by senior poet Vimal Mehra, an alumnus of the school, by esteemed guests.

The event was presided over by senior critic Dr Ramakant Sharma, with senior writer Dr Haridas Vyas as the chief guest. Noted storyteller Hari Prakash Rathi was the guest of honour, and Mahavir Singh ‘Khursheed’ Khairadi served as the presenter. The event was conducted by the society’s joint secretary, MM ‘Armaan’.

The society’s president and senior dramatist, Dr. Sunil Mathur, extended a warm welcome to the guests. Secretary Kamal Sharma spoke about the society’s creative activities and noted that it would enter its silver jubilee year of creative pursuits from the upcoming Makar Sankranti. Senior literary figure and the society’s founder, Anil Anwar, gifted literary books to the dignitaries, while patron Mridula Srivastava presented them with mementoes.

The dignitaries officially unveiled the narrative poem, followed by a ceremonial honour for the poet Vimal Mehra. He was presented with garlands, a turban, a shawl, a coconut, literary gifts and a memento. Mehra also recited some of his poems and selected excerpts from Agni-Samadhi for the audience.

In his address, Mahavir Singh ‘Khursheed’ Khairadi highlighted the narrative poem’s excellence based on the heroic tale of Chittorgarh’s first Saka (battle) and Jauhar (self-immolation). He referred to other works by other poets on similar themes, praised the author’s efforts, and pointed out some areas for improvement, providing a balanced critique of Agni-Samadhi.

Speaking on the occasion, guest of honour Hari Prakash Rathi said, “We Indians have traditionally captured all our knowledge in metrical poetry, and this oral and memory-based tradition has protected our literature and history against the destruction by cruel invaders.”

He further said that my metrically drafting the extraordinary tale of Chittorgarh’s first Jauhar and Saka, poet Vimal Mehra, has created a work worthy of being in every household.

Chief guest Dr Haridas Vyas said, “While metrical discipline is crucial in poetry, the flow of emotions holds greater importance. This is why Tulsidas is considered a greater poet than Keshavdas.”

Presiding over the event, Dr Ramakant Sharma acknowledged the richness of Indian metrical poetry traditions and emphasised that there was no need to draw inspiration from Western poetic movements.

He remarked, “Only a poet like Mahapran Nirala, well-versed in metrical discipline, could break those norms and compose free verse while maintaining rhythm and melody. Poetry should have rhythm and lyricism, and if fully metrical, it becomes even more beautiful.”

The event witnessed participation from notable literary figures and poetry enthusiasts from Jodhpur and beyond.

Poet Vimal Mehra’s previous works include song collections “Gaa mere mann gaa” and “Milan suron ki bansuriya”. His upcoming work includes the narrative poem “Shakuntala”. He is proficient in various forms of poetry. He regularly contributes to various literary publications and national newspapers and magazines.

Pune (Maharashtra) [India], December 31: The Literary Warriors Group (LWG), led by acclaimed poet and award-winning author Neelam Saxena Chandra, organized its much-anticipated two-day literary festival, “Bhasha and Beyond 2.0,” at the prestigious College of Military Engineering in Pune on December 14-15, 2024. The event showcased a confluence of literature, art, and culture, enthralling attendees with book launches, panel discussions, poetry recitations, art exhibitions, and cultural performances.

Day 1: An Artistic and Literary Extravaganza

The festival commenced with the traditional lamp-lighting ceremony by esteemed guests Shri Sunil Deodhar, Shri Shailendra Mishra, and Dr. Sujata Jadhav, alongside Neelam Saxena Chandra, President of LWG, and Dr. Renu Mishra, Vice President of LWG. Dr. Renu Mishra served as the emcee for the day, while Dr. Aparna Pradhan, Treasurer of LWG, set an auspicious tone with a soulful recitation of Ganesh Vandana.
